If you come on here looking for some mind-blowing conversation or profound words of wisdom, well you've come to the wrong place and will be disappointed. I'm just an ordinary bod who likes to share my day with anyone who cares to listen. Tales of my dogs, my garden, my family and happenings in my life that I feel might just be amusing....If you're happy with that, draw up a chair, light up a ciggie if you wish or have a cup of tea and make yourself at home.

Help please
I'm buying a new Laptop and giving my G/daughter my old one, there's only barely 1/10th space left just over 1GB on the data and the other stuff, I'm in a quandary about what to get rid of to free up space. I have an external disk to which I am transferring personal stuff, pictures and things, but it's hardly making a dent in the memory, can anyone help me, I possibly could send a snapshot of what programmes are on here if that would help.

Arlene, I've only recently gotten a laptop (remember that auction?) but I had read some different reviews about the smallish disk space as compared to a desktop tower. The resulting answers were that with today's laptops, the INTERNAL size AND the memory could be increased to at least double. Memory is always a diff thing than the size of the disk itself, it's it's own thing. So, what I'd do is phone some computer companies around your area that do "builds" and repairs and see if they can upgrade your entire unit for you. If they can, that would solve your problem.
ReplyDeleteTake all photos, music and programs that you haven't used recently and put them onto a dvd. You can decide later what to put on your new computer. Have your granddaughter look at the programs and keep only the ones that she wants. Make sure you have run disk cleanup and defrag. This should free up some space for your granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteThanks both for your help, Jenny I also have a table top but as it's in the spare room I only use it when I surf daytimes [mostly sit with the laptop in the evening. It sounds a good idea what you say, asking for a rebuild, but that would cost, and as I've just paid to have the keyboard repaired, and bought a new Laptop I don't want to pay out any more. I think what Beth says sounds good by letting Sarah sort out what she wants to keep once I've taken out my personal stuff, but TBH she'll probably only use it for Facebook and emailing stuff. so things like Excell or Dreamweaver would be a total waste of time for her. I've also put this on my WP blog so we'll see what that throws up, if anything. thanks again.
ReplyDeleteYou did not say how big you hard drive is, but usually your computer will not work very well if the hard drive is close to being filled to capacity. A couple of things that you can do is check your settings and see how much disk space is assigned to restored versions of your operating system and reduce the number of previous system versions tat are being stored. Additionally you should clear the cache's of your browsers and empty the recycling bins. It is also a good idea to defragment your hard drive.
ReplyDeleteGenerally your computer should have a setting which allows you to compress the files on your hard drive thereby freeing up more space. If this is unclear you are welcome to send me an email and I will try to further elucidate. Laochofchicago@gmail.com
Great idea to have her take a look at what you have installed so that she can decide what she wants to keep. If she's just going to use the computer for web surfing, Face Book, etc. about all you'll really need to leave on the machine would be the Operating System (Windows) a web browser and security software. Be sure to use Control Panel to UNINSTALL anything she doesn't want; don't just delete the programs because that doesn't really remove them from the hard drive. Control panel's Add/Remove programs page will also tell you whether you're actually using what's installed, helping you decide if you want to install it on your new laptop. Clearing the cache and running disk defrag are a must after you remove what she doesn't want.
ReplyDeleteI'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have or hep with any problems you might run into and you already have my e-mail. It's my way of paying it forward for all the help I've received over the past 20 years.
Thanks for the help Chip, I'll certainly pay mind to it and with the help from Loach I'm sure I'll get it sorted, I get my new one tomorrow, so I'll be able to see what's on it, Sarah will probably only use this one for Facebook at 17 what else is there? LOL
ReplyDeleteMy word, how cute is that header! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteArlene, I just ran by to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR! XOXOXO
