On my Books page I put that one of my favourite books was Sarum by Edward Rutherford, it's a huge tome of a book but I found it so fascinating I actually read it again, all 1000 pages of it, Jumping on from there I was reminded of another good book by one of my fellow bloggers I read many years ago, called 'The Good Earth' by Pearl Buck, it was also made into a film I think starring Loise Rainer and Paul Muni, Although it was made in 1937 [no I didn't see it then] in case the cheeky among you were thinking that, I was a teenager. huh! it has a timeless appeal, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028944/ .
I've started reading Rutherford's latest book 'London' another huge 1000 + pages, I got it from the library but will never get it finished before my time is up, even with extensions, so I've gone on to Amazon and bought one for £5 that way I can take my time.
I woke up at 4.15 am with the rain drumming down and read for over an hour. I read the reviews on it just to make sure it was going to be worth it, and they are very good, I've had it a week and have got to page 79. !

And thanks Jenny D I will take note of the books you've recommended, and keep them on tab.
Guess what? it's raining again folks, I've never seen so much water since I was on the ferry, no, I fib, I was on the clifftop this morning with Tango. The sea had a right boil on. I gotta take him out shortly.
You must explain to us Yanks what a slice of custard is.
ReplyDeleteI love to read but have had to put the books on hold until we can finish paying for my new specs. What our library needs is a larger selection of large print books for old geezers like me. I can increase the font size on my laptop and still read but the strain still causes my eyes to tire and about an hour at a time is all I can manage before I have to take a break.
ReplyDeleteOK Wifie, a custard slice is a bottom layer of flaky pastry then add a thick layer of rather thick custard, I think maybe you call that cornstarch, but maybe I'm wrong, anyhow it's yellow and vanilla flavoured, solid but squashy, when it's thinner you pour it on to fruit or sponge pudding, then it's got another layer of flaky pastry topped with icing, they're about 4 x 2", also done in apple and cream and around 400 calories. Yummy.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a real shame Chip as reading is one of the cheap pleasures in life, maybe e-books would be the answer? as possibly the print can be enlarged, but there's nothing in the world like the feel and weight of a book, plus the expectation of opening it and getting into the first chapter, I really hope you can get your glasses on your nose very soon. But please don't let it interfere with your blogging. or burd photography.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE to read. I am partial to murder mysteries and I love a good romance. I just found out that Santa is sending me an E-Book for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI think you are describing what we refer to as Custard Pie. Very delicious!
Now that's spoiled your Christmas Beth, I'm taking a sharp intake of breath here! fancy knowing what Santa is bringing you, shock horror, I hope they don't tell you the title. Custard PIE, hmmm a pie is something [to us] that is encased completely in pastry, whether meat or fruit, the custard slice is open on all sides. you don't know what you've missed. Before I started this diet, I bought a box of two at the weekend and had one SAt, one on Sunday. Mmmmmmmmm yummy.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm hungry just reading about it all :)
ReplyDeleteYes, in the States, that is a custard pie. Pies here can have open sides or a lattice work top, or a completely covering pastry top, OR even a sweet crumb topping. As for me? I'll take any pie I can get. To me, pies are better than cake any day.
Arlene, my favorite line of yours today was:"I've had it a week and have got to page 79." FUNNYYYY!
Let's do a swop Jenny, a pie for a slice and then have a bet on which is best. As I put on my this'n'that blog, I'm on a diet. but I can give way for a little cake eating competition for God's sake, it's all in the name of improving our culinary arts.
ReplyDeleteWell my bed calls and a couple mor pages on New York, it is late and I can't read for long. LOL
Hi Arlene ;) Wolfie is back for a moment at least! Sorry to miss so many...too much headbanging the wall with this nightmare they call Photoshop!!! So easy to use when following the instructions in the BOOK...see! It does have some relevence to your blog ;) Impossible to use and hopeless disaster when going it alone! And NO I don't have much patience but yes I'm certainly getting reading practice in!! Good to see you safely home and reunited with Tango :)
ReplyDeleteHey Wolfie, if you understand your tools then that will make it easier. Photoshop is something you have to work with everyday, then it will get easier.
ReplyDeleteOoooh...Custard slice...my mouth is watering, so much to taste, between the icy top and the custard filling...and flaky pastry, messy but oh so deeelicious... and no, I haven't had one for ages....(custard slice that is!! cheeky!!)
ReplyDeleteand have you seen the new Kindle?..looks amazing and such a modern way to read books.

Thanks for your comments Arlene, always appreciated, and yes...you never know what hidden' 'under' the shelf eh?.. ;-)

I love custard slice just have to nip off to the local bakers now.......Enjoy your book I am a slow reader so it would probably take me a decade to read that many pages. .LOL.
ReplyDeleteHugs Sheila xx
I gave up on photoshop Wolfie, just not enough time to devour all that knowledge, there are other, just as good editing programmes out there, I often use Paint.net, or an oldish version of PSP that I got free, Hee, hee.
ReplyDeleteSheila I would be the same reading all these pages that's why I bought the book from Amazon for £5 and I can take as long as I like.
No Pen I haven't seen the new Kindle, haven't even seen the old one, What the hell am I missing here? I am just so behind with all this technology.
