Spare a tear.

I was taking the dogs to the local Rugby club ground this morning when I saw what I thought was a rat hobbling along the side of the drive in then realized it was a little hedgehog just a baby trundling through the packed snow. I got an old dog towel from the car and scooped it up. Later when I checked on him/her I noticed blood on the side of the basket I'd popped him in. On closer look the poor little mite had a horrendous wound on it's head and the skull was showing with another smaller wound. I drove straight to the local vet and they took it in and I was told it would have to be put down as the wound was far too serious to be saved.
I took a photo on my phone just before I too it in.
What a lot of pain the poor little thing must have been in just so sad.

  1. OHHHHHH, Arlene! How sad this was, but what an ANGEL you are to stop and scoop him up and get him to the vet. Thank goodness if he needed to be put down it would be with no more pain and in peace. That is all due to you, Arlene. Not everyone would be so kind. Whew, gal, you have me in tears right now. Blessings to you and that dear little baby hedgehog. God has given you another gold star today. XOXOXO

  3. Crikey folks I didn't expect to get accolades for what I did to me that's the right thing to do how could anyone not? I was prepared to keep it over the winter (though I understand they pong something dreadful) till I saw the wound and realized it was very serious.
I had similar some years back, I saw a few crows swooping down on something in the local field it too was a baby hedgehog it wasn't oo badly hurt but it went off to the vet too dunno what happened though. I bet you ladies would have done the same.

  4. My babysitter from when I was little saved a flying squirrel. It somehow survived and she would put it in her shirt to keep it warm.

I don't think I've ever seen a hedgehog in person. They are cute little buggers. You did a good deed. It would have suffered more if you hadn't scooped it up.

  5. Well Wifie I've never seen a flying squirrel in person so that makes us equal. I would have tried saving this one which means getting it's weight up first but it was to badly injured.
    Thanks Beth. X
