A sad day

The other day I decided to go for a walk in the local woods which I hadn't visited for a time, In the summer the bracken is way over my head and I have been spending this winter on the beach.
It's a lovely old common pretty much left to it's own devices a haven for birds and butterflies, I was shocked and angered to see that it had been set on fire, about 50% of the place was completely   devastated, ash, pine, oak totally blackened, Just when the birds are in full nesting  mode, I always loved going there this time of the year to hear the birdsong, It will be years before it recovers, there's every possibility it was children, as the Easter holidays seem to bring out this boredom factor, I often wonder if they are never shown or taught the beauties of the natural world, they don't appear to have any wonder on the cycle of life of the creatures we share the planet with, I often feel they have no finer feelings or sensitivity in their souls.

I know that if I caught them, I should quite easily forget that I am a civilised person and string the little B***s up by their ankles over a slow burning fire. I just feel so sick to my stomach, and I certainly couldn't face going there again for a long time.
This is two pictures I took there in 2004 Jet, my lovely black boy is in the background,

Thank you for visiting and please come back, Arlene, Tango and Ruby

  2. oh no! im so sorry! ya, seems sometimes that the cruelest of the cruel are those that are young. when mt st helens blew, in 1980, it devastated much primal beauty in the area. it has com back, different but just as beautiful. perhaps it wasnt set, maybe it was a careless accident, or something else. still, i know the feeling of that kind of loss.

    1. Hi Sheila, It will take years to recover, about ten years ago a largish part of it got burned, though nothing near as much as this, and though it has grown back [till now] it was mostly bracken and gorse, we lost a lot of lovely trees, I knew a patch where some wild harebells grew and I'd come every may just to make sure they were still there, that's gone forever now, I've got a photo of a lone birch tree that grew in the burned patch it looked quite magnificent, bet it didn't escape this time though.

  4. What a shame. How awful for the wildlife that lived in the woods.
You're right though, it seems like the many of the kids today aren't taught to respect the planet and it's beauty.
The kids here are finally back in school after Spring Break and Easter but they made a mess smashing bottles in the park behind us for the wildlife and people's dogs to cut themselves on. Destructive little creeps. I think maybe the parents are just too busy holding down two jobs to parent their children properly or just to self absorbed.....maybe that is part of the problem, I'm not really sure, but I know my generation respected nature more.

    1. Hi Robyn, how right you are about the kids, let's hope they come to their senses before they are adults, as all these devastating wars are caused by this sort of insensitivity and ignorance, it makes me rage when i see the carnage that they bring. Much of the trouble is due to the fact that parents aren't allowed to discipline their children, even if they wanted to.
The ironic thing now is that it has poured with rain all day Monday and today, bit late now though.
